Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province with an urban population of 8.5 million. Located in the eastern part of China, it plays an important role in the regional cultural, economic, scientific and academic life, with over 50 universities, more than 500 scientific research institutions, and a great number of professional and technical personnel. Being in the subtropical monsoon climate, the four seasons in Nanjing are clearly demarcated. It has short spring and fall and relatively longer summer and winter, with annual mean temperature of 16℃ and precipitation of 1,100 mm.
Nanjing is one of the most famous national historical and cultural cities in China, and was capital of ten dynasties, namely Wu, Jin, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen, South Tang, Ming, Taiping Tianguo, and Republic of China. There are many well-known scenic spots such as the Dr.Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum, Chaotian Palace, Mausoleum of the Ming Emperor, the ancient city wall of Ming Dynasty, the stone carvings of the Six Dynasties(222-589), the Tombs of Southern Tang Emperors, the Presidential Palace of Republic of China(1911-1949). The Qinhuai River Scenic Belt, the Xuanwu Lake, the Mochou Lake and the Qixia Mountain are also well-known far and near.
Nanjing food is a smooth combination of regional and local flavors. Traditional Nanjing style is called Jiangsu cuisine. Some of the best places to try typical Jiangsu food are around Qinghua River and Hunan Road. Salty duck, tangbao (steamed dumplings filled with minced meat and gravy), sweet potato seedling of osmanthus fragrans, sesame seed ball, congee with red bean and glutinous rice are the most famous local food in Nanjing.
